It is almost that time of year again for the annual Oppikoppi pilgrimage. Any dogs up for an all dirt route to the festival? Anyone keen? My wife will be going through in a cage and so could carry camping stuff and cases of beer etc so as not to have to carry too much crap on the bike. This year the theme is Sexy Crooked Teeth:

OppiKoppi, Sexy.Crooked.Teeth, 6-8 August, Presented by Levi’s®and Jose Cuervo. And of course the rest of us. Much like trying to flay an impenetrable Sekelbos no-go-zone with a panga just “angers” the roots of the plant (according to late night Northam hotel small bar colloquial wisdom), the strategy of not hosting an Easter OppiKoppi festival in 2010 has left the OppiKoppi family, the tune clan and rock ‘n rollers in general thirstier (sic) for the annual tune pilgrimage . And the authorities wary. Which is how we like things - as this was pretty much how we found them in the beginning. Thirsty and ready for tunes. And the authorities wary (And to tell the truth – not ready for tunes).

Rock ‘n roll in the bushveld was never designed to be pretty (otherwise it would of course have been played on a variety of flutes) (And by pretty people who can and will play flute. In front of other people.).

And with some luck this will not happen in and around Northam. Ever.

Hence ladies and gentlemen may we proudly present the 16th annual willing but not very glamorous OppiKoppi Bushveld Rock Ballet Trago Comedy:

Sexy.Crooked.Teeth.

The theme for the 2010 festival edition of the, now reasonably world famous, OppiKoppi bushveld festival, was inspired by a Lucinda Williams / Willie Nelson song -“Overtime” and just about sums up OppiKoppi in three words. (That is if you had to pick three words quickly at knife point, somewhere late at night) (Save of course daring, willing and ready – but there is time for a festival like that).Thing is: for a few days each year it is a way of life and a chaotic search for new friends, old friends, tunes, beers and anything faintly resembling short term memory for more people than we know what to do with. Or without. But usually it is also full of surprises (mostly dusty), collaborations, killer tunes, more and more art and just a few completely unexpected, but expected jabs of straight forward hedonism. I.E.: Just what the doctor ordered in a wonderful but crazy and way-to- serious-for-its-own-good country such as South Africa. Or at least that is what people have told us. We just play the tunes.

And it is very much our intention to put up the sound and most of the lights (after last year’s incident), fire up the generators, and the tunes, let go with the smoke and trickery and then sound the horns to invite our inner and outer most circle of friends.( Wide and honest as they and us believe themselves to be). The festival may have been running for 16 years, but there is no time like now to dive into 3.5 days worth of music and camping mayhem. Who knows: maybe you come out the other side almost the same person you were before? What can possibly go wrong?

O Yes: you don’t need to bring extra people compared to last year. Come as you are. OR were. OR just come. Pull in cousins. We will sort you out. Or in. This is the first bit of media information from the Oppikoppi clan for 2010 but expect a whole lot more in upcoming weeks. Really nice artists (and a few surprises), really nice art, nifty tricks and gadgets . And lots of gimmicks for our family of friends to extract maximum value from the event.
