BMW already rules the adventure-touring category with its iconic R1200GS, but for the ever-growing contingent of ADV buyers who never venture beyond paved roads, the ultra-rugged, boxer-powered GS gives up some ground to more street-biased, superbike-influenced competition like Ducati’s Multistrada and Aprilia’s all-new Caponord. Not for much longer, though: BMW is all set to release a more road-biased adventure bike to compliment its best-selling GS, this one based on the all-conquering S1000 superbike platform.
All we know about this new adventure bike at this time is what we can glean from a few spy shots, but it appears to adopt the powertrain and many chassis components from the S1000R naked bike, including 17-inch wheels and Brembo radial-mount brakes. No doubt the power profile of the 999cc inline four will be electronically optimized for all-around performance, but with 160 (claimed) perfectly distributed horsepower produced in S1000R guise, this engine should have all it takes to match or best the Multistrada—and the rest of the ADV competition—in any acceleration contest.
There’s a good chance this new bike’s main frame will be shared with the S1000R, though the subframe will no doubt be redesigned to make more room for a passenger and also accommodate hard bags and other loads; a large alloy rear rack and saddlebag supports can be seen clearly here. A larger fairing with the requisite “beak” dominates the front end where, unlike most recent BMWs, symmetrical headlights surround a centrally located intake scoop, beneath a medium-sized, adjustable windscreen. Wheels are 17 inches at both ends, underlining the all-pavement, all-the-time intention of this design, but long travel suspension will increase comfort and performance over rough secondary roads.
Expect, of course, the full suite of electronic technology that defines all of BMW’s current motorcycle lineup, including variable ride modes, traction control, ABS, and optional Dynamic Damping Control electronic suspension. Also expect to see this model appear as soon as this summer as an early-release 2015 model—the bike shown in these spy shots looks utterly production ready, and just a paint job away from appearing on your local showroom floor.
