During my last two rides, my KLR650's gearbox sporadically started making a strange whining noise, which does not sound healthy at all.   :(   (The bike's a 2006 model, 11'000km on the clock, no doohickey yet.)

I've only noticed it on gravel, after riding for quite a long time, and when changing gears a lot.  It also does not carry on for long - it normally stops when changing gear, or pulling in and releasing the clutch.
Otherwise it's completely sporadic, and does not follow any pattern (e.g. only in specific gears).  It also does not cause any jerking or affect performance or handling in any way - just the noise.
As far as I remember, once the whining carried on a little bit, even when I brought the bike to a stop.  It got slower and slower, much like a shaft slowing down and coming to a stop.

I suppose there could be a very broad range of reasons, but does anybody have an idea what it could be?
