Steering Damper is it really necessary for big adv bikes

My request is only related to big adventure bikes, 800cc+

I am in the process of buying a 990R -  Do I need to buy a steering damper.

What is the benefits of a steering damper? Does it help in sand? Is there any other advantages on other terrain?

There is a view that it is only effective on high speed damping on a big adventure bike.

Please all experts help here before I spend another R7'500 on a already expensive adv bike
