Topo or not to topo?

I need some guidance here please.

So I got the latest mapset (R20 from the CapeUnion Mart in Hydepark...it's close to work).

What is the main difference between Topo maps and streetmaps? I know the topo maps are much bigger, so I will asume that is has more detail? what exactly is this "more detail". Is it only contour lines... those thick black lines that show up on the garmin screen over the roads??? or is there something more...?
