Tyre changing - broke rubber band inside rim

I was busy tyre changing this morning and I broke the rubber band thingy that goes around the inside of the rim that protects the tube from the ends off the spokes. All the shops are now closed so I cant buy one until monday and I was wondering if it would be safe to wrap couple of layers of duct tape around the inside of the rim to provide the same function or is this an incredibly stupid idea to even think of, much less do?
