Uitkyk Pass
Western Cape (Clanwilliam - Algeria)
Skill level: Novice to intermediate
Road Condition: Loose Gravel Surface (some paving)
Remarks: Slow speed recommended. Heavy traffic. Steep descent/ascent
Situated inside the Cederberg Conservancy, Uitkyk Pass is worth the effort to visit. During winter the pass is often obscured my mist and the temperatures sometimes plummet to -7°C
Snow is rare but waterfalls do ice over. The biggest danger in winter is flooding at the base of the pass and wash-aways near the top and middle.
It is not uncommon for people living at Algeria to be stranded in the mountain for days on end after a heavy flood.
The pass itself can be approached from any direction. I prefer to ascend it from Clanwilliam and when one reaches the top you are greeted by a grass covered valley which leads almost all the way to cederberg Oasis where you can have a nice cold beer.
The opposite direction is also recommended since you travel through the valley and suddenly find yourself on the edge of a very tall drop overlooking the Algeria valley below.
The road is winding and you should be very careful not to speed. The surface can be extremely loose and/or corrugated which makes rear-wheel braking almost useless.
A must see. Photos rarely do it justice
