The next time you are riding between Jhb and Durban and you have 15 minutes to spare, duck off the N3 just after Van Reenen, and ride this superb gravel pass - and do it in the downhill mode, so as to truly enjoy the stunning scenery. The road services the railway line, some sidings and a few farms around the Besters Valley and includes a 200m long tunnel built in 1925, which is curved and once housed the railway line. We dig into the fascinating history of the area and uncover some history about SA's very first railway line - a 3 km haul from Durban to The Point. Bookmark this pass for a sunny day and get lost in time and space and escape the frenetic traffic off the N3.
