WANTED: Gear (and advice) for 5 year old pillion

I'm thinking of taking my 5 year old son on a day-ride and sleepover (camping). I'm looking for:

- Advice on whether it is better to put him in front of me, rather than on the back
(I have scrambled around with him on the front a bit)

- Advice on what kind of protective gear to get him
(e.g. I'm considering skate-board/roller-blade elbow and knee protectors)

- Gear
(please let me know if anyone has some stuff available for sale)
