WASHING ( RIDING GEAR)

When my riding kit is dirty I normally remove the armour and chuck it in the washing machine , All zips and Velcro closed , wash and hang outside to dry . Is this normal practice ? washing powder good to use? Saw a post , cant remember now of a spray on waterproofing liquid , just to make sure it stays waterproof , not sure if the powder washes out the waterproofness from the factory.
will read the labels again , kit going into wash Saturday .
