Why is the KLR so popular?

I am interested to find out why the KLR is such a popular bike. Not saying it does not deserve its reputation, but what attracts people, especially on this site to pick the KLR above say a Yamaha XT660, Suzuki or the BMW 650cc?

The BMW and XT has much more high tech equipment on the bike, like fuel injection, better clocks and so forth, but they don't seem to be so popular. Also, if I read things right, the KLR is not fast either and the XT and BMW will easily outrun the KLR on top speed.

Is it the price or what.
