Recently got a 1984 XR500R, I only started it once and the bike smoked while being cold but less when warm.
Since then I have cleaned a very dirty air filter. The air box to carb boots were hold in place with small cable ties, replaced those with the proper Honda clamps.
Started her this morning and there was no smoke, rode around the house and no smoke. Two hours later started her again and no smoke.
Could cleaning an air filter and adding those clamps have cured the smoke problem ???
Can those two things cause a bike to smoke ???
