I have no knowledge of both bikes from experience but I have seen the 2012 XR.  It put a smile on my face.

I have never ridden the "new" XR650L, but I know the old 600 quite well, and how much stronger can the 650 pull? I guess not much at all. and based on this, if a modernish watercooled 610 is only marginally faster than the XR-L, then this husky must be very kak. No offense meant towards the Honda, but it is old-school aircooled technology, and it would be like BMW building a aircooled GS800 to compete with their current GS800. No contest.

Not a whole lot has changed from 1983  :thumleft:  minor differences here and there but this is where it began.

2sd the 600 pulls better than the 650l but the l is smoother, I think the L is quite de tuned different cam etc but I have seen some mods on adv rider that makes them run apparently.

If a 30 year old bike with small changes done to it can still sell today as a modern D/S bike, how advanced were the Japs in 1983? WOW!!!

Um before we all get teary eyed about how wonderful  new XRL is, there are a number of things to remember:

1) A lot of people associate the XRL with the XRR even in a very loose association which gives the XRL more appeal - its true for me as well even though I know they are completely different bikes I cant help associating them - which is nothing more than a marketing trick.
2) The market has had a big glaring hole in it for years - mostly IMO because of BMW dominating the GS market with more road orientated bikes such as BMW Dakar which people thought were the same thing (but they arent).  So there has been no new real players here for years - and many people even on this forum will deny that that market gap even exists calling it "too specialised" or "only for the riding gods" etc
3) The only new entrants to this market niche in the last few years have been the 610, the 630 and 690.

There have also been some stalwarts in that niche that have been there for years though:
1)  DR650
2) KLR
and now in the same league is XRL which has just been re-introduced.

To me the fact that Honda decided to re-release the XRL and is doing well with it, means that that the hole in the market definitely exists and one wanders why it took Honda so long to realise that.

What it also tell us is that we could do with some more new options as well  :thumleft:

XRL is not a re release its been in the market for years, just not in SA, although I agree it sits in the same camp as DR and KLR I will say it has a way superior suspension than both of those bikes but poorer fuel efficiency.
I have owned the xr650r the dr650se and the xr650l so I have a fair idea of the pros and cons of each bike. It will always boil down to personal pref, I have not ridden a 630 but I would not take one in a hurry for the following: 1. it has fuel injection and 2. the spares / agency setup does not make me feel comfortable. Aside from all that I think they are great. Heard a rumor about a 30k clutch glitch but guess we will find out as they start getting into the high mileage category.
Also resale, how well will they sell with 20k on the odo? the XRL will sell easily.

Point is its not realy about power it's about what bike suites you best for the given task. I like an XR as it is simple and cheap, it presumes to be nothing but puts a smile on your face when used as it was intended. I love that it does not have a matching tent, I mean wtf really. load it up a go make memories and see the beautiful country we live in. Who gives a shit if it is short a few horses it's got enough, when the terain is rough there is not much in it anyway, as for riding at 150 on a gravel hwy well that does not interest me anymore either. You can't knock an XR it's a great bike, it's old school cool. My 2c :thumleft:
+1
The XR makes so much sense we all should have one  :mwink:

Yes it is a "old" bike.
Yes it is air-cooled.
Yes it is slower than most bikes.
Yes design wise not much has changed in the last 30 odd years.
Yes we don't give a @#$%!
