Super T or KTM 1190
« on: October 16, 2013, 05:39:34 pm »
Hi all
I have been a member on the forum for awhile now and have done a lot of reading! I am about to do my first big "investment" and have narrowed it down to the above two motorcycles. I am a heavy weight and tall 6ft4. I know it come down to personal preference but one must be better then the other.......I liked the KTM 990 but after taking a friends for a test ride I found it VERY un-comfortable....so it's one of the top two. I live on a farm outside Machadodorp so gravel for 9 kilo's to get to the closest bit of tar. ???

As you have taken the KTM for a test run and found out what you know. :-\

Take the ST on a test run, you might even just decide to keep it :thumleft:

They are both big bikes and both good bikes. Much of a muchness. Have you ridden them both ? The right one will tell you which to buy.

E.g., I had a GSA and loved it. At the time I got gatvol of big bikes and that's the only reason I sold it. I was given an opportunity to ride a 1200 Z for a day. Great bike and as light as a feather to ride, whereas the GSA, you are aware you riding it.

Yet, if given a choice, I would take a GSA again. The 1200 Z did not "talk" to me.

i've had a big GS and a big KTM.
i would not buy the GS with your money,  but,  i'd go into debt for the KTM.

the real question,  to the OP,  is are you satisfied with less than the best?   if you aren't,  there can be only one - orange.

My point was just that you'll know which is the right bike to buy... I've been offered rides on a KTM many times and refused, because I know what will happen

The Orange has always been more of a status symbol than being a duel purpose bike :pot:

The 1190 and Sten, while both being big D/S bikes, are worlds apart. The Sten is the D/S world's Goldwing, along with bikes like the 1200GS, DL1000, etc., while the 1190 is the D/S world's Hayabusa.
Longterm? The Yamaha, by a country mile.

KTM are so seriously not bikes that age well.

you are correct to an extent,  it is a bit of a status symbol,
precisely because it is the best dual purpose bike.

Between these two I would go for the Yamaha (And I'm not a fan of the S10). The 1190 still has a few serious issues.

And see how SGB has to cut, weld and re-engineer his 1190 to make it tour-worthy. :pot:

The XT1200Z is rearing to cross continents as it stands at your YAMAHA dealer.

Tacking the big urge to brand bash out of this conversation i would say the easiest thing by far is just to ride both.

The S10 i only rode for a little spin on tar and it was great. Feels light as a feather nice low down for both feet to be comfortable  to flat foot. It has great pillion capability and has a nice tank size. Really comfy on the road would love to take one on a gravel road.

The 1190 i also just went for a 45km ride on tar only. Also easy to flat foot and weight nice and low down. Was allot more fun but that's the way it pulled and felt like a super bike that made it fun how practical it is to ride like that i would know haha. Really comfy but i think the S10 is more comfy. Also nice petrol tank size and a bit more electronics to fiddle with and settings. This thing will also tour nice on tar.

My opinions.

If it was my money and i was planning on all my travels alone i would get the KTM and if i going to travel more with wifey i would get the S10 / GSA.
