Eish.....What to do .....what to do
« on: August 10, 2017, 07:36:10 am »
I've been bike less for a few months now , and I have the itch again .....in fact its become a full blown rash.
I went to look at a 2002 BMW 1150 GS last week. The bike is a code 3. Apparently it was dropped and sustain ed minor cosmetic damage and was written off by the insurance company . The bike was bought back and repaired and looks in reasonably good condition . It has 78000 km on the clock , which for a pig is considered low milage.
So here is the dilemma
It needs a bit of work.
Front brake disks will need to be replaced as they have too much float in them. (They rattle)
Throttle bodies bushings will need to be done .....they have the dreaded ..tikking noise.
Battery is FUBAR....needs to be replaced.
Tyres need to be replaced.
There is no tool box under the rear seat.
The front beak dosnt quite line up with the tank which means the front carrier bracket is slightly bent.

But for the rest ....the bike is in good condition.
The guy will take R37k for it.
DEAL.......OR.......NO DEAL.....
What say the experts ????

For a code 3, needing ANY work, I would be looking for a better deal. You can pick up an immaculate R1150GS in the R45K which needs nothing doing and nothing spending. As an aside, that tool tray and tool kit will set you back around R1k secondhand.  8)
When is this "Old enough to know better" supposed to kick in?

For Brembo discs about R2000 a pop, for OEM double that, EBC and others a few hundred cheaper.  :snorting: :snorting:

The way you describe it, I'd say it's worth about R28k - R30k, my 2c.

A code 3 bike will always have a stigma and is worth less for this reason.

It also sounds like this one has not been treated with much TLC as the faults have not been repaired by the owner. He doesn't sound like someone too worried about maintenance. You have spotted the more obvious faults but it's the hidden faults that would concern me.

I also think your rash would be better treated by the application of a bike seat on a different bike, or possibly this one @ 20% less than asking. I am in agreement with Welsh, and he has a wealth of knowledge about Pigs.
For the love of it.

Patience Coxwain, the right bike will come along....it always does. You are probably going to kick yourself down the line if you buy this one just because you had a fire in your belly.

After a brief attempt at getting my Code 3 Transalp back on the road I learnt that a crashed bike always hides niggles. Replace the brake disks and you'll find the bearings are stuffed. Replace the bearings and notice the axle isn't straight... Not necessarily mechanically accurate but you get what I mean.

As Welsh says, for a lot less effort you can pick up a non-crashed bike for not much more than it costs to buy+fix the code 3.

Thanks guys for all the good advise so far. :thumleft: :thumleft:
I also need to mention, that the bike is perfectly ride able and has a current road worthy certificate.  :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

Those parts listed sound more serious than a "dropped" bike, more like pretty big crash. I would pass.

I don't know the 1150's, but I find it strange that the throttle body bushes are worn at a low 78000 km's.

No they can be, particularly is the throttle bodies are not balanced regularly.  8)

Don't buy a Code3 anything and save yourself hassles.
Unless you are looking for an excuse to be permanently cured from bikes. Then buy it.
