Thinking of selling my Dakar
« on: October 09, 2017, 02:59:09 pm »
Hi all

I use my 2004 Dakar as a daily runner to work and back. I am in the process of buying a 800GS and thinking of selling my Dakar, but the problem is that it has high kilo's, it has 119 500 on the clock. It runs like a dream every day to work and back.

I really don't know what I will be able to get for it? Will I not get more to strip it and sell the parts?

Similar bike was sold here  :laughing4:

+1

i had no issues selling mine - it sold very quickly.

parting it out will get you more money but that will be months and months of hassles - certain parts will sell quickly other parts will never sell - so it will take very long

my take on it is

R10k gets you a bicycle or a chinese scooter
R20k gets you a 1980s era 600cc thumper project bike
R25k+ gets you a bike that is usable and reliable

so depending on how much you want you need to price it accordingly

How far would you think your dakar would still take you reliably?

at 123k mine still did not use a drop of oil between services

i heard of 200k+ and still no issues - if you look after them and warm them up properly before giving them stick they will last and last

The more I do homework the more I think mine is heading that way.
I was concerned as I tend to ride alone and into funny places.
Only issue I had was my own fault ( battery that was dying and I delayed replacing till too late)
I have since bought a new battery and also one off those small booster jobbies that has light and usb outlets also to take with on trips

I saw a Dakar with 280,000 km on the odo at my mechanic. I asked the owner about any major works he's had to do to the bike. Can't remember the response off the top of my head, but all I know was that the engine was still happily ticking over and that the gremlins were just the usual issues (water pump seals, fork seals, etc.). I remember that his bike had fewer issues than mine, but he used his for commuting and I've taken mine in the bundus and dropped it countless times. The only times I've been stuck were due to (1) a dead battery, (2) a stone busting my radiator, and (3) a stripped screw head along with a snapped Torx wrench (could not remove my wheel to replace a flat tyre). My 650's now on 94,000 km (bought it 4 years ago with 30,000 km).

I have the 2007 model. its on 45k km. Bought it in November with 35k km.

Also thinking of selling to get something more road orientated, but I have to convince the SO that it is needed.

Fit a set of Michelin Anakee 3 tires and you have a great road bike. Still miss my Dakar.

We did that to my old bike as my brother has it now and he says it is a great road bike!
It is his daily transport all over, it is bit skittish on the gravel but does the road to my place without issues.
