The only time you really need power is when riding sand, for everything else including touring a modern FI 250 is good enough.

My TTR could go anywhere, but some dunes it just did not have the oempf for.

No I replaced the IRC's early on with Dunlop 606's

Great thread!

there is definitely an advantage owning to owning either a gravel spaceship (KTM / BMW / STEN) and one of these more simplistic smaller cc bikes.

The only place I miss my spaceship is in heavy wind, when riding with bigger bikes and when I'm in a hurry to get home.

2 out of those 3 can be avoided. And lately, I ride solo anyways.

These are addictive little bikes. I've already clocked up 2500 km on mine in a month. My old 650GS feels slow and clunky in comparison and while it was being serviced I got a 1200GS as a loan bike (800s and 750s were all out). I felt like I was riding Battlestar Galactica! How do people take those things off-road? I was too nervous to even tackle a little sandy 5m shortcut to my home.

I don't think so, but the experts can give their opinion. As far as I know the Rally has the same engine, but is heavier, so probably less power to weight? Yet I'm glad I had it when we were caught out by time in Tankwa and ended up riding in the dark: nice super-bright LED headlight! I think another difference is longer suspension travel in the Rally.

My Thoughts too, 10 kg heavier, R10k more

but the Fairing will definately help with a Tailwind, should give at least another 10 km/hr on TS.

Think the current L and Rally are the same when it comes to engine output.

For a plaything I would take the L, for something more suitable for touring the Rally.

Agree the lights are excellent.

I forgot about the fuel range. It's absolutely spectacular if not doing highway speeds. Anything around 6-7k revs (up to 110 km/h) = 30 km/lit (300km/tank). Highway (110 km/h and up) = 8k revs and higher = 23 km/lit (230 km/tank). Big difference.

If Honda sorts out the undersprung rear suspension anytime soon this may turn out to be a decent 250. If not it's just - meh!

Don't think Honda will change anything, but plenty of aftermarket options becoming available.

In this video they replaced the springs and oil in the front but don't mention the rear
