Took the Monday between the weekend and the public holiday and went for a ride around the block - why not.
Headed out of town via the tunnel to Worcester, gravel on the Overhex road to Robertson , top up in Montague before hitting the real dirt for the day.
Up and over Ouberg (the other one) pass, turn towards Ladysmith south of Anysberg. I arrive at the Sanbona gate, sign says road closed but the guard assures me I can pass - apparently the presence of large carnivores requires I have an escort, so they send a vehicle to follow me between the gates. Surprising a lone Oryx in the dry riverbed I start to plan what I might do should I come across something a little more grumpy, syncerus caffer perhaps.
Leaving the reserve, I made my way towards the R62 and turn right towards Barrydale, the left onto the gravel just before the town. About 15km down the intersection with Gysmanshoek - another road closed sign, this time on the side of the road. There are signs the road is in regular use so I decide to see how far I can go and continue up the track, I reach the Cape Nature gate which is open and has no indication that entry is prohibited. Before I know it I am up and over the mountain, riding the valley on the southern side.
Empty farm roads all the way to Suurbrak, before slabbing (can you slab a 250?) all the way back to CT via the N2.
700km of soul food. 300km on a tank (Montague to Riversonderend) 33km/l
