After a nervous start, being delayed on the N1due to a tree falling over blocking the highway things looked up after arriving early ..

Or so i thought... tanking badly on the written tests made us all realise it's not going to be easy . I'm looking forward to giving it stick tomorrow.

Great bunch of guys and looking forward to what's in store with the cold front looming.

For now we settling in. Thank you Honda and Specialised for the spread.
Good luck Muzzy! What's that blue bike doing in the background there  :pot:

Honda Quest - Day minus 1

Denzil (aka Dipstick) and I met in Nelspruit and hit the road at 10am. We high-tailed it to ORT to jump on a plane and head for CT International. We booked ourselves a mighty Datsun GO rental, went to fetch our new pal, Pierre, and headed out of CT, Ceres bound. We eventually got to our overnight farm stay at 20h30 where a few other semi-finalists were waiting for us. I knew it was a rerige boere braai when the fire was only ready at 22h30. It was a long day in the saddle.

Day 1
Below is the first glimpse we had of Kaleo Guest Farm. Seeing such a sight after 10 days of uncertainty really made my stomach twist and turn and a woes shot of adrenalin went through my body. It really got real, real quickly!

After everyone had arrived - strictly before 11am - we were briefed by the very special Specialized Adventures staff on what next but still there was a lot of uncertainty.
It was a roller coaster ride of note. What were we going to do? Would we be put on an obstacle course? Must we strip a bike and put it back together? Fitness? Mental tests? All we knew was that we were given a list of tools to bring and our riding kit.
The day truly was a roller coaster. From 2 written tests that made most of us feel rather pathetic, to a practical and mental test to a spot of public speaking (ahhhhhhh!).

Out of the 1236 applications any one of these 30 lekker peeps could easily be the 14 finalists. How the Specialized Adventure team chooses the 14 finalists only they will know, but good luck to them!

One thing is certain though. I now have 29 new friends, the lekkerest bikers I have met. Each of us so different but we share two things in common - a passion for adventure and a passion for bikes!

Roll on day 2!

Day 1 Complete

“Coming around the corner for the first time as we arrived and seeing all these beautiful bikes was impressive. I can’t wait to get on one!” #6 – Denzil Laurie

“Wow! This has been far more than I expected already! I was quite prepared for bike related stuff but have bombed a little on the questions about South Africa and Africa – I should know a lot more of my country than I do! ” #10 - Hannes Ebersohn

“I am so glad I came, I have a lot of stuff on the go at home, but what an opportunity, I am so glad I am here. It’s also quite a thing to see the instructors are all ex- contestants from last year’s Quest. It says a lot about their experience.” #20 – Murray Campbell

“I was gutted I never made it onto last year’s Quest and followed it online like an addict! Just being here, feels like I’m now in the movie!” #25 - Pieter Laubscher

“It’s an interesting mix of competitors. I know we are in a competition, but I can feel the connections already. They’re a great bunch guys and girls. I think you instructors have your work cut out.” #28 – Stephen van der Merwe

Day 1, that started for the competitors on arrival at 11am, it has been a combination of easing into the process, growing expectations and connections. From the admin of registration, rules of the competition, lunch, practical tasks and tests and ending with the theory of the Dual Clutch Transmission (a first time even seeing one for many) and a short intro that each has to give about themselves.
Bootcamp has the dual function of not only finding 14 worthy competitors but also to impart an experience that prepares them for the great adventures they’ll have deal with safely on Honda Quest in less than a month’s time.

Roll on Day 2, it should be a full day.

Putting on the Rumbux crash bars... hopefully not to be needed

Loving the sticker kit on this years bikes, they sure look the part. Reminds me of Survivor  :thumleft:

I saw six or seven bikes being loaded at Honda Tygervalley on Saturday, Hardy's crew picked them up on a trailer.

They do look good, I asked if the stickers are available and one of the guys said they can make a plan if wanted.  I think if you want, communicate with Hardy

Day 2

5am for the farming types amongst the group is the norm. For the townies, maybe not so much. In the crisp morning airs at the foot of the Cedarberg there was a surprise sunrise walk in full kit.
They were invited to submit a picture of their experience. It was time for some to reflect and gain perspective, maybe others to explore and appreciate, and for all to socialize, relax and have fun.
Though all did the same exercise, the pictures that they took on that walk reflect the uniqueness of experience.

“In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.” John Muir

Scenic introspection over and belly’s full after breakfast, it’s onto what there’s been much anticipation for, the Honda Africa Twin.

Later today will see them being tested over very technical terrain, but for this morning is an orientation ride to get a feel for the DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) and the bike. Of the 30, only 3 have ridden the DCT before, none own one. The larger group has been split into smaller manageable teams that rotate between stations; whilst one is going on a small outride, there’s many skills to check; first aid, tire changing, maintenance and bike prep.

This afternoon things will get a lot more serious where their performances will be counting towards the overall scores and that final 14 berth.

Can someone do me a favour and paste a few photo's from the Specialised Adventure facebook group over into here please. We're really struggling with bandwidth.
I wonder where that road goes? And that, has usually made all the difference. Appologies to Mr Frost
