And what about Riaan coming 13th in 2013 on Debut?
And 12th in 2014?

Ross is quicker than Riaan was... IMHO.  Still claim him as ours even though he is from Botswana. 2 time SA offroad champ in the 450 class, 7 times Desert 1000.
Dont confuse guys riding SA's fledgling rally scene with SA's offroad champions.

And a real meneer of a humble and generous guy. I remember him telling me how the cost is so prohibitive, even with his local sponsors helping lank, and that he could probably not continue due to it.

I was able to plot two routes down the dune that have an "exit" that are not in mountains or cliff face. Navigation would be key because a wrong turn off the top could mean you end up completely trapped. the start of the route would be on the right (east) and would also make a good place to start a special stage. It is easily reached by tar road and is at an altitude of about 1700m.

Toby Price broke his wrist (guessing here based on xrays). He is still keen to go, so lets see how that pans out. Since that broken femur he doesnt seem to be able to catch break. Last year he was just shafow of his prior self.

Broken wrist is a bugger - normally six weeks minimum and depends on type of break and whether it has needed screws and plates.  :o  Mine was a full year before it felt normal again. He is a tough bugger though.

What a great discussion on the Dakar.
Also saw Toby Price had posted pics on Instagram of a screw or plate having been surgically implanted into his wrist after a break.
He is still dead keen for Dakar and said he will be there in the line up come January.
Massive respect for any rider taking on this challenge, I'll never have the skills or the means to even think about doing it.
Roll on January and keep the discussion going.
Any predictions for a winner?

Sam I recon has to be the favorite, as he has the most experience in dunes.

I agree with Sam as a favorite but personally I would like to see Barreda, Walkner, Brabec or van beveren take it.

Barreda - Phffft - will depend whether he is rushing to his manicurist.  :imaposer:  I am over him. I would like to see Soultrain or AVB take it on a Yammie. Just for shits and giggles to the orange.  :ricky:

I can't believe Toby has gone and hurt himself so close to Dakar, I'm bitterly disappointed, I love watching that oke race a dirt bike. Despite him saying he'll still be racing I can't see him handling that pain for the duration of the event. IMHO they should just pull him early to stop him damaging it further. He's too valuable to throw it all in on one race, even if it's Dakar.

You cannot compare European access to rallye to that at the tip of Africa. Geopolitics plays a role. I am not surprised there have not been more Saffers in the sport. No Amageza or Kalahari is enough to blood riders, and especially youngsters, to the sport - never mind the cost of the sport for one or two events a year.

Definately...

- French and Spanish (and Portuguese) have incomparably better training opportunities than Slovaks - Morocco is just short hop across a pond.

To put it in perspective, just to do the Junior nationals (my kid  was 13) - for me from Stellenbosch to Louis Trichart, one way, 2200km, HluHluwe, one way, 2300km.
Slovakia is 1300 km to France "and a short hop across the Med to Morocco."

Europeans (the dudes in Europe) is good at Rally because Rally is accessible, the Baja and our Offroad series is not rally, hence the reason why they do not do so well, they need to get to Europe first.

Watched a doccie on Cyril Despres in the run up to a previous Dakar - He stopped practicing on a bike a month and a half before start time, and focused on a lot of other aspects.

Love him or loath him, he was a true professional, working towards one goal, taking the Dakar.
