Hmmm Dakar is moving

https://www.automoto.it/dakar/dakar-2020-goodbye-america.html

The Dark Side Of The Moon, March 5th 2019 . I tell the truth. Indiscretions and anticipations do not move my soul. For nothing. Unless it's Dakar. In this case find yourself in the kettle of the most fantastic forecasts, every year, invariably of these times, it is exciting. Dakar drug? Maybe. It's like a game, a way of betting . Even with oneself by testing supposed abilities to see far or pretending to stick their nose in the future.
A "detail" had escaped me. Or rather, when it surfaced it was too important and too little verified to be taken seriously. The news is that ASO, Amaury Sport Organization, the organizing company of the Rally and owner of the Dakar brand, has brought home all the material of the South American logistics. Emptied the warehouses where equipment and tools were kept useful from one year to another for over two decades. Operation in big, or partial but lucky, secret. End of the bluff. The assumptions of the Ferries of the Dakar from South America stop being fantasies.
Goodbye America, exceptional geographic platform, emotional, support ... Yes, a nice support. Fundamental. Of passion, of public, of money. 11 years and eleven editions of Dakar, a quarter of his history!

In little more than a month from the end of 100% Peru the persistent operational tracks of the Race disappear from the Continent. Probably something started already during the 41st edition, and this explains the feeling of "economic" Dakar that was obtained here and there from the days of the verification of Lima, in contrast to other obvious "expenses", such as the new infrastructures of the bivouac .

Does that mean that the decision to end it there in South America had already been taken, and with that also about the new destination? Likely. So someone already knew , and in this case he made double the game, willy-nilly. Etienne Lavigne, for example.

Nervous lavigne. Why nervous? Why did he have to play the game and lie, hide the known truth of such an important change ? No, to this kind of lies of a "political" character, therefore not serious, the "Boss" was used to it. Unless he already knew he was part of that epochal change. It is a flea in the ear that starts from South America along with that of the "leak" of the dismantling of logistics. It is not the only one. A flea liner. Go on .

Suddenly the contours of the "oriental fairy tale" of a Dakar of Arabia become more realistic. Saudi Arabia, possibly together with a couple of "satellite" countries, papabili Jordan, Oman, a little less the neighboring Egypt of which we are talking with insistence. The "canon" remains of a fairy tale, 15 million a year for five years, which for me is clamorous. Recalls the Cat and the Fox on one side and a Pinocchio on the other . Unless it is wrong to call it "canon" and that it is an "installment", a fifth of 75 million. Still the order of magnitude of a big deal, but possible if the purchaser can dispose of almost unlimited resources lightly . And this would be an even bigger change than the second transcontinental transfer of the Sabine Opera.

Calm. Let's go back a moment and recap. From America, I arrive in Asia, say Arabia, via Etienne Lavigne. Of the original Dakar only the Name would remain. It is a Project to be developed in a totally different and new geographic, social and cultural scenario. Without any historical reference on the field. Another flea bailing in the ear. But if Lavigne ... who at the helm of the Dakar 2020 number 42 (counting also the one canceled)? Xavier Gavory, the current head of relations with the Competitors and in fact Lavigne's right-hand man? Gavory did a great job, there's no doubt,to do well which, however, a more discreet profile is welcome. His. So who puts the face and the charisma needed to mend the shreds of history in the new Project? Another figure with a super image, Peterhansel - maybe! - or Al Attiyah, considering the geographical assumption? Again Marc Coma? the Catalan ace, co-author of the most beautiful South American Dakar along with Tiziano Siviero, took a lot of his but then said hello, disconnected the umbilical cord and changed his job. It would take a man of proven experience. A man with a relationship, experience or history . Or both of them. More back in time? Hubert Auriol, no, René Metge, not even, Africa Race and question marks. South American fleas in the ear. David Castera?

Times of great work for Yann Le Moenner, excellent CEO of ASO. We stop here. Nearly. Of course there is not much time! It ends up being there again next year.
Rally nut. What could possibly go wrong?

Dakar signs five-year agreement with Saudi Arabia.

Interesting... the region sure has the money. Pity, Southern Africa would have been awesome. But some questions need to be resolved - what about female competitors, what about people the Arabs have problems with etc?

Amazing riding there. 500km+ epic dune stages and 500km rocky lava flows, craters and mountains. Those with off-piste navigation skills will do well. All the fast guys are going to get hopelessly lost. That will be fun to watch.

I wonder if they will allow any Israeli riders?  :peepwall:

Hope it includes Jordan which is at least a little more progressive and really really amazing riding. Anyone know? :dontknow:

Nassar should be in his element ! I really hope they do manage to squeeze in Egypt too. Will be nice to have a little bit of Africa. Wonder if the race will start in Paris again ? 8)
