Has this ever been done before?
« on: May 30, 2019, 07:14:52 pm »
Has anyone seen or heard of a BMW GS1200 that has been converted to chain final drive?

Would it not be nice to be able to play with gearing a bit?

The final drive chain on a R1200gs is only to keep the skelms from stealing it 4 o clock in the morning. :)
Freedom is when you get to a T-junction and think to yourself.
AAAAAAAAAAAAGH I think I'll go left.

That would be quite a setup,
Take the output and turn it 90 degrees, somehow getting out of the swingarm, then have a chain which
doesnt get in the way of the diff/brake disk.
Yeah thats a challenge for sure.
Probably easier to just buy a KTM and suffer that way.

It's the Borg-Warner conversions on the SA XS1100 Yammies that made me wonder whether it's been done to the king of the FD.

The conversion was done by the late Tommy Johns and a few other well known players back in the day and was raced by Rod Grey

The likes of that wizard of a Tommy Johns I have not encountered again.

Must've been a sight to behold, all the work involved.

It was actually pretty simple stuff, for a good tech person like Tommy Johns.

It entailed a small housing that bolted onto the crankcase, in this housing bearings carried a shaft that had female splines that fitted over those of the output shaft, with sprocket-carrier splines coming out the other end.
This housing bolted straight on where the old bevel-drive gear housing sat.

They then made a square-section swingarm to take a rear wheel with sprocket-carrier.

The bike is still around - I have seen it at the Bike Expo at Kyalami, as well as at Zwartkops on some of the shows, it was even ridden on the track then - I dont know who owns it though.

A different exercise converting the Yamaha which had transverse crank and gearbox shafts, to the boxer where everything is longitudinal, making the conversion considerably more difficult.

But there have been some machines in the past with a longitudinal boxer engine with chain final drive, among them ABC, Gnome and Rhone, Douglas and Velocette.
Succumb not to the erosion of those born of unconsecrated union.

"Two Wheels, an engine and a place to sit." What more do you need?

Still Here - amazed and lucky.
