Beautiful Natal
« on: November 02, 2021, 06:34:27 pm »
Last weekend I went exploring in the hills above Midmar dam on my own, and had such an awesome ride that I invited a few of my riding mates to go check out the area with me on Sunday.

Saturday we had heavy rain across the province, but Sunday's forecast looked great, so the ride was on.

As what usually happens, the ride swelled to eight bikes on the day, probably more than what is optimal for a ride like this, but most of the guys turned back before we got to the really good section.

The first obstacle we got to is known locally as the "red road"

It's a steep rocky ascent that is more suited to lightweight enduro bikes than dual sports, and with the rain we had it was treacherous. The only one in the group who made it to the top was Rob on his 500, but Rob is a freak who will find traction on an ice block.

After this most of the guys decided to stick to forestry roads and went off to look at a nearby waterfall.
Greg on his 450, Carey on her 350 and me on the 500 headed into the hills for some exploring

Carey has always been a competent rider on her GS800, but ever since she added a 350exc to the stable her riding has come along in leaps and bounds.
She is not scared to go anywhere.

Monday was voting day and the weather was hot and the sky cloudless.

My voting strategy was to go vote in the evening as I thought it would be quiet by then. Well that didn't go as planned

During the day I couldn't stop thinking about the red road that I had failed to get up the on the previous day's ride and how it by now must have dried out after 2 days of sunshine. So I put a message on our W/A group asking who wants to go for a late afternoon ride and see if we can get up red road. Only had one taker, who hadn't been on yesterday's ride. So I contacted my mate @Highsider and he was keen to go for a ride.

So back we went through the forests to red road, which was nice and dry, but still steep and loose and rocky.

What a cool way to end a weekend  :thumleft:
