Michnus, just think about it, if it wasnt for the "additional protection", it could have been worse!!!

Hey Michnus, you sure it's not 'ole Hungus that got into the spokes? You should'nt play with it while riding.

Hope you are back on two wheels soon! By the looks of it this fork has been repaired with duct tape on a previous occation. I am no engineer, but I think you pushed the boundries a bit with the use of duct tape - I would at least ad a cable tie or two instead of only the duct tape. Could have saved you a lot of pain!

The three things you need to fix anything in the universe: duct tape, WD-40 and a hammer.  If it moves and it shouldn't, use the duct tape.  If it doesn't move and it should, use the WD-40.  Otherwise use the hammer.

Jislaaik M hope all heals well!!!!!

I had a bad experience with my dads 2006 Gs when it was splitternuut. I went over a rail crossing and as I hit the crossing the bike cut out and the rear locked up. This was on tar I had a rear wheel sliding for 40 od meters. I don't know how I saved it just not my turn I suppose. BMW found the battery broke a cell in the battery made a dead short and blew something in the servo assited system.

Other issue I had was Elsebie's 1200 gave me lots of issues with her ABS and servo's not working properly due to the battery being slapgat, the day before the bash I switched my bike on, and the servo's start running like mad and the ABS light keeps blinking and shows a red triangle. Thought it was the same shit, so I took the battery out, charged it over night and same happens next morning, servo's running like hell.
Well fok that, even the GS911 did not show a fault, and I had the same shit months ago in the Transkei and nothing happened, BMW designed the system to cut the units that's not working, and you only have normal brakes. I am still unsure if this also had a link to the broken parts of the fork.
The bike slide and hit the barriers, that impact could also have twisted and broke the ears of the fork, maybe by servo's locked when I tried to brake. Weeetie!

Michnus, I'm very glad to hear that you're ok. We arrived at the bash after sending Andy660 on a helicopter flip, only to hear from Metal Jockey that you'd bitten the dust too. Put a real dampener on things.

As for the cause of your accident:
Before I purchased my 800GS, I very briefly owned a second hand 2006 1200GS. It had a problem with the brake servo, exactly as you describe - lights on and constant whining. I only rode it in this state to get it home, and most of the time, it behaved as it was designed to when there is a problem with the servo or the ABS; i.e. residual manual braking. However, twice on my way home (at very low speed luckily), while slowing, the servo assist suddenly applied full pressure on the front, and slammed my nuts against the tank. It sounds like this is what happened to you, but at much higher speed, and with catastrophic consequences.

I did some research on the various 1200 forums, and found that this is an unusual, but by no means unique problem. I got rid of the bike very quickly, and will never again have anything to do with a bike that has electric brake assist. What a moronic concept for an adventure bike in particular. BMW obviously realised that it was a bad idea, since they did away with the electric servo on subsequent models.

Now that is interesting.. never knew.  :o  :o
