R1200GS - Fine grating sensation - Bearings? Brakes? FD? ***SOLVED***

Took the bike to Northside BMW. James kindly agreed to take the bike for a spin. His informed opinion is that the vibration experienced during cornering is due to the flat tyre profile. Once again the Guru's were correct!! Thanks for all the help and assistance - much appreciated! :) :) :)...

Front wheel removed and bearings checked - they run smoother than ky jelly. Will pop past Northside BMW this morning and see if they can help out with an opinion.

R1200GS - Fine grating sensation - Bearings? Brakes? FD? ***SOLVED***

That is what I am afraid of! IF it is the FD and there are no fine metal filings or shavings then it could possibly be the sealed roller bearing on the pinion. I need to work through the mechanics of FD operation to see that it makes sense.

R1200GS - Fine grating sensation - Bearings? Brakes? FD? ***SOLVED***

Thanks for the advice so far. Have checked the tyres and there is no cupping or saw-tooth profile on the edge. The tyres are Anakee 1's and are getting a bit old. They have about 3mm of tread left in the centre and the profile is quite flat (Note to self: ride the next set harder!) With...

R1200GS - Fine grating sensation - Bearings? Brakes? FD? ***SOLVED***

I think that the ABS sensor is magnetic and would pick some of that stuff up? Although I haven't drained the oil yet the ABS sensor is clean and has not picked anything up. As a precaution I might just change the FD oil on Sunday after the Toy Run just to check.

R1200GS - Fine grating sensation - Bearings? Brakes? FD? ***SOLVED***

During the last week of daily riding I have noticed a new sensation on the bike when cornering that can be best described as either a very high frequency vibration or a very mild bearing grating. I have tried to isolate it by rolling off the throttle and free wheeling with the clutch engaged...

    Overpants vs. Kevlar re-inforced jeans

I was lucky enough to find a pair of BMW overpants when I visited the USA early last year. I have used them daily for over a year now and feel naked and exposed without them. Often wear them over shorts too as they can get hot in the middle of summer. Although I do not have direct experience...

    Removing catalitic converter

Been running with my removed cat (courtesy of Beemerman) for 10 000 km's now. I removed it so that I could use non-unleaded fuels in remote places. My results: Slight power increase across the rev spectrum Fuel consumption improvement of just  below 10% under similar riding conditions (I seem...

    Puncture on way home

On the way home from work today I noticed the bike starting to feel "heavy" and the backend becoming skittish so I pulled into a garage to check the rear wheel. As expected the rear was flat so I found the offending culprit, a nail.  ::) I pumped it, got it home safely and then proceeded to...

    the wobbly GS threat

I rode behind a guy on a Dakar on the N1 between William Nicol & Rivonia Rd this morning. He was very uncomfortable and I watched him as he nervously wobbled his way through the traffic and cringed as he struggled to keep his balance over the "cats eyes" that mark the white lines. I pray that...
