Air Filters - OEM or Aftermarket?

I can't find anything relevant using the search function, so let me put it to the forum.

In your experience, does a so-called 'performance' air filter make any difference?

If so, how do you quantify this statement?

In my humble opinion the OEM filter is sufficient for my particular needs, but I am interested to hear any opinions to the contrary...
