Okay, so I'm copying Marvin's thread here and asking the same question, but now specifically for the R. I’ve owned the XR650L and didn’t really care what oil I put into it, but I changed it regularly and kept it topped-up. Never had any issues.
Now the R is a different story, that’s a high performance motor and runs much hotter than the L. I’m convinced fully synthetic is the way to go here, but what are your opinions and experience? The service intervals are also shorter on the R, so the cost of the oil does start to play a role if you use it a lot.
