Have just got off the phone with the dealership, and they want around R900 for a 5000km service to a KLR. That's more than I'v paid for services to cars in the past...

My question is:
I have limited mechanical skills and want to take over the services on the bike. Is there anything so technical on a service which I couldn't do myself with the help of a proper bike manual? I called the shop and cancelled the service and told them my plan. The guy sighed and said that I'd invalidate the manufacturers guarantee. Surely fitting the upgraded doohickey would do the same thing? Surely the cost saved on servicing would be more than the knock I might take selling it later without a FSH? Aside from a set of Spanners, screwdrivers, alan keys, leatherman and a bike stand, what would I actually need???

I hope that someone out there can offer some words of advice.

Thanks
