heated grip replacement - OEM or MX type?

Has anyone put non-OEM MX-type grips on their heated-grip GS?

My (heated) grips are worn and I never liked the OEM grips as the rubber is too hard, so I thought I'd use the opportunity to put MX grips.

Question - Can I put normal MX grips on, or must it be BMW heated-grip specific with a bigger diameter to accommodate the grip heaters ?
