In-ride entertainment - Musicplayer

I have used a clapped out old 30G Ipod with the original earphones once, but it was a big schlep.

• What other player options are there, besides Ipod? I'd prefer to load MP3 or WMV straight onto it without having to have to install Itunes, converting all your music and all the jazz that goes with it (even if this means less space for tunes). Battery and charging also important for obvious reasons?
  
• What earphones are good and small enough not to turn your lid into a medieval torture device?
