jacket vs chest guard

Hi all

I'm new with the whole biking thing and I'm buying gear this weekend. I'd like to know what your opinions are about whether to get a jacket or chest guard.

Our aim is to ride mostly gravel but nothing hectic and very technical (yet).  Also, do you get special ones for women?
