So, I was up in the Karoo again and decided to look for some dotted lines coming back from Carnarvon…

The trip up was a bit wet with the Tankwa River in flood I had to reroute twice in order to get up to Southerland.  My average speed in the “Onder Karoo” was about 35km/h driving sideways for about 80km – either this way or that way – dancing from side to side on the road “having fun”.  The ground was soaked and the surface like snot even with diff-locks on.

Once past Southerland I followed the far most Eastern track to Fraserburg and found this little road sign and decided there and then to check this out on the way back.

Past this I crossed “Die Velt” that was lightly covered in snow and icy cold at the top of this pass.  The remainder of the track was KTM type roads…

At the construction site I had some spare time and drove up one of the local mountains and took a nice panoramic shot – this landscape will soon look significantly different.

On my return

I was on the dirt within 15km and followed the South Eastern track to Fraserburg.  From here I took the first turn to the South off the R356.  This took me past places like Skoongesigberg and Renoster Valley.  On this 100 odd km section I encountered one other vehicle…

Besides my little track I spotted on the way up I was looking for an old wagon trail in the same area and had a word with some of the local farmers.  They will probably give me access to the old track next time I go up.  There is some coordinating as the short 6km section crosses three farms.  I took my initial track – a public road nogal” leading down the escarpment to the East towards Merweville.  This is a relatively “new” road as it is not shown on my 1820 maps.  This is quite a spectacular pass overlooking the Dwyka Canyon.  The down side is that there are around 20 gates on this road.  Nevertheless a spectacular piece of road.

In an attempt to take some shortcuts I spent 4hours running in to dead ends on farms.  Due to this delay I had to reroute to the N1 and TAR back to CT – very uneventful.
