Ever since reading about the oil burning issue about older KLR's the issue has been haunting me. I bought a new 2012 KLR650. It has 2400km on the clock. It was in for its 1000km service and I did pretty much everything the manual tells you about riding in your KLR. The few times that I have been riding it was on long rides (between 200km and 400km at top speed of between 100km/h and 120km/h)

My questions is this. Why does the older KLR's use so much oil? Has the problem been fixed in the newer models. Is it necessary to top up or worry about the oil level after a 400km trip? The service centre changed my oil with the 1000km service and the oil gauge was at the top mark. After 1400km it looks like it has gone down to about 3 quarters full? There is no smoke out of the exhaust while driving. Is it just something that KLR owners have to make peace with that your KLR will use oil?

Thanks
