Looking for recommendations: PTA to DBN

So, I'm heading up to PTA to collect a bike. Was wondering what recommendations might be available for travelling down to Durban.
My current thinking is that heading east to eMalahleni and thence to NewCastle seems a more interesting route than heading straight down the N3.

Mostly looking for a reasonable interesting route down to DBN. I've got some limited time to make it there and then from there back to CPT.
I'll be on my own, so also not looking to break the world record for gnarliest ride out there.

Any recommendations?
PS: I don't know the area from a bar of soap
