Mitas has decided to do a pre-emptive recall on the E-07 front 19 inch tubeless tyres. The reason for this is that in the event of a flat tyre there is a chance of the tyre not staying in place. In layman's terms it the bead area is slightly too large in diameter and essentially doesn't sit tight enough on the rim. In the event of a flat or running at low pressures there is a potential risk that the bead can pop off the "safety bump" and run into the centre well of the rim. This recall ONLY effects the E-07 front tyres in a tubeless set up! As a precaution tubes can be fitted at our cost until the replacement tyres arrive. If you would like to use this option please contact us so that we can make the arrangements! Mitas are rushing to produce replacement tyres and will fly them to SA as soon as possible (late January) so please contact your dealer to arrange your replacement tyre.
To be clear the bead is within spec BUT managent at Mitas is not happy with the fact that the tolerance is not tight enough as they want to maintain high safety standards! So whilst the tyres are technically not completly unsafe the perceived risk is to high in their opinion and they would rather look after their end users!

1. Is this recall voluntary?
Yes, this recall of certain E-07 tyres is voluntary. It is a necessary pre-emptive measure to demonstrate Mitas’ commitment to manufacturing reliable motorcycle tyres.
2. Which tyres are affected?
The motorcycle tyres subject to the voluntary recall are marked “MITAS”, “E-07”, “tubeless” (“TL”) and feature these DOT code ranges: 0111 to 4812. These are the recalled sizes:
110/80-19 M/C 59T E-07 TL MI,
100/90-19 M/C 57T E-07 TL MI,
110/80-19 M/C 59T E-07 DAKAR TL MI.
3. Are any other Mitas tyres affected by the recall?
No other tyres are affected by the recall.
4. The tyres are recalled from which countries?
The tyres subject to the voluntary recall have been sold in Australia, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, UK, Ukraine, USA and Venezuela.
5. How many tyres are being affected by the recall notice?
There have been 1,752 affected tyres produced and sold to dealers. As of 20 December 2012 there have been 448 affected tyres quarantined.
6. How did Mitas announce the recall and made sure it reached its customers?
Mitas does not sell motorcycle tyres directly to end-users. Therefore, on 7 December 2012, Mitas asked all its dealers to quarantine the affected tyres and transport or destroy their stock of remaining unsold tyres back to Mitas. Further, on 21 December 2012, Mitas notified the Czech Trade Inspection Authority (Česká obchodní inspect) about the recall. The Authority is expected to notify the RAPEX which then distributes the note to national authorities in the 27 EU member states, Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway.
Further, Mitas is working with sales offices and dealers in non-EU countries to notify relevant national authorities.
Mitas has also published the information about the recall on www.mitas-tyres.com and released the information to the press in relevant markets.
7. What is wrong with the recalled tyres?
Under extreme conditions (low tyre pressures), the recalled tyre can suddenly loose air pressure.
8. How did Mitas learn about the risk of sudden loss of air pressure?
Mitas been made aware of two cases of a sudden loss of air pressure. After testing, Mitas recognised that there is a potential for sudden loss of air pressure and has taken a pre-emptive action without delay to ensure drive safety. Therefore on 19 December 2012 Mitas decided to voluntarily recall the affected tyres from all markets and to alter the production process.
9. What does an affected customer do?
Mitas requests the motorcyclist not to ride on the tyres and return tyres thought to be affected by the recall to his or her tyre dealer for immediate advice. All reasonable cost related to the replacement of the tyres will be covered by Mitas.
10. When will the new E-07 replacement tyre available?
The new modified E-07 tyre will be made available at sales points as soon as possible, latest by the end of January. The DOT date code of this replacement tyre will be 0413.
11. Is there a risk by continuing to ride on the tyres?
There is a higher than reasonable risk of sudden loss of air pressure under certain conditions which may result in an injury to the driver. Therefore, as a precaution, Mitas asks all customers to stop using the tyre and return it, or to fit an appropriate tube, prior to any further use.
12. How does the recall affect Mitas’ tyre dealers?
On 7 December 2012, Mitas customer service requested all Market and Sales Managers to quarantine all remaining stock of the affected tyre. The dealers will be compensated for all reasonable costs of refunding the affected tyres to customers, replacement for new E-07 tyres, transportation of tyres, etc.
13. Where have the tyres been made?
The recalled tyres have been made in the Czech Republic.
14. What is the DOT code?
The DOT marking is a combination of numbers and letters, and it identifies the tyre production plant and date of production. The manufacturing date is a four number code following the plant code. The date code signifies the week and year of production. For example, the DOT code “6J 0512” is shown on a tyre which was manufactured in Mitas’ Zlin factory (code 6J) in the 5th week of 2012. The DOT code is always shown on the sidewall for easy identification.
