No panniers for me, thank you very much!

When I bought my bike last month it came with the pannier brackets, but without the panniers.  Although I managed to negotiate an amount off the purchase price, I did not expect the prices I got from Bring My Wallet just now:

GSA Pannier Brackets:  R7838.81 
GSA Alu Panniers:  R13109.91 
GS Pannier Brackets:  R2807.00  :-\
GS Panniers:  R8501.00  :-\

At this rate, I must say I'm considering getting soft luggage, really... Any advice?
