Oil

Probably been discussed before but what grade oil should I use on the XR? I used GTX 20w50 (which is fine according to the manual) for the first service and it may be my imagination but the engine seems noisier when cold. I'm planning on changing the oil every 3k km or so, so I thought GTX would be fine. Maybe I should change to something thinner?
