I thought I would share my project with the forum and maybe get some help and ideas from everyone. The idea was to find a dual purpose bike that I would not feel too sorry for on which I can better my offroad skills. The wife did not buy that story and has now decided to also learn to ride a bike, so this will now effectively be her bike.
It is a KLR650 2007 that was in a crash 3 years ago. Up until the crash it was well looked after and well maintained, but since the crash it was left outside in the sun and rain. I picked it up on Saturday and started stripping as soon as I got home. I needed to compile a list of all the most critical parts needed and a second list with the nice to have parts.
I gave it a service, oil change and filter and a new plug. Fresh fuel and a jump start and it started up almost as soon as the petrol got through. At first it only idled, but after a quick cleaning of the carb and removing some wasp nests out of the exhaust, it is revving up nicely now. I also drained the water and flushed the system.
Must have, first priority parts:
Fuel tank
Water reservoir tank
Battery
Front brake lever
Top fairing stay bracket
Battery
Choke lever
Nice to have, non critical parts:
Left and right footrests (front)
Left mirror
New chain
Front indicator
Dihookey
Left and right fairing shrouds on tank
Hand guards
Bash plate, not plastic
Crash bars
I've spoken to DocKLR and need to finalize with him for some parts. If anyone else have some parts or goodies lying around, PM me and maybe we can make a deal. My budget on this project is very limited.
