Welcome Adventurers to another issue of our RAD Adventure News.

This last weekend 14 clients of RAD, Dave and Myself spent a rather wet weekend away in Sabie, riding our Adventure bikes in really testing conditions. Being the adventurous group that we were, the miserable weather could dampen neither our spirits nor our desire to ride and we landed up having a whale of a time.

In the bottom of town is a little gem of a lodge called “The Sabie Town House” which we called home from Friday to Sunday, run by the nicest family you could hope to come across. Greg, Kate and their 2 boys really made our group of soaked bikers feel totally comfortable and ensured that our bellies were filled with the best food and drink we’ve had in months.

On Sunday the sun decided to make an appearance, so we made the most of it, scratching the tarmac with foot pegs and then getting adventurously turned around on the dirt tracks of the Sabie forest.  We eventually got home to JHB at 19h30, tired, cold and worn out, but it was unanimously agreed that we had a brilliant weekend!

Puncture Repair Kits in stock!
Punctures are a real nuisance when enjoying a nice ride in the bush, but nothing at all comes close to the realisation that when you’ve punctured your tyre, you don’t have the correct spares and tools to get going again. This generally means a rescue call to friends, but not if you’ve done your shopping at RAD Adventure!
We have put a lot of thought into this equipment and it is what we use ourselves. Tubed or tubeless repair kits are available from R245, bead lube and brush kit for R95 and short tyre levers for R75 each. Once you’ve repaired your puncture, you can re-inflate with the best compact pump on the market form Slime at R710. You need this ‘cos you’ve generally given all your air bombs to your lesser prepared mates in the past.

This kit is compact enough to travel with you always and is really simple to use. So for just over R1000 you will be self-sufficient, able to get yourself out of the most inconvenient of situations and still keep your friends answering their phones… Job Done!

From there it’s usually asphalt home, but stranger things have happened in the past. Numbers will be limited so drop me a line and join in the fun.

DATE CHANGE!!!! Hartebeespoort Hustle- Sunday 15th September
This is one of my favourite rides which takes us through the spectacular northern surrounds of Gauteng, around Hartebeespoort and back to civilisation. Nothing too technical, however a familiarity with riding dirt roads is recommended. We’ll meet at RAD at 9h00 for a coffee and clutch out at 10h00 sharp.

We’ll have lunch at African Swiss where the “Boytjies” can tackle the technical climb to the top of the koppie if they wish…

The finish point will be Molly Malone’s in Lone hill at around 16h00 where we’ll quench our thirst and push off for home at your leisure.
Cost R250 including lunch. Drinks excluded.

RAD MOTO Birthday Bash -26th-29th September
Here is something that we at RAD are very excited about!  We’ll be celebrating our 2nd birthday in the beautiful Kingdom of Swaziland from the 26th to the 29th of September 2013 and we want you, our clients to join us!

Maguga Lodge will be our base for the weekend, which is a great venue overlooking the Maguga dam and offers very comfortable chalets, either to be shared by mates or a couple sharing a fun weekend away. We’ll feed you, accommodate you, route you through the finest riding terrain Southern Africa has to offer and when we’re done with that, we’ll quench your thirst while we party the nights away to our very own live musicians.

Our team of professionals and Khwela Adventures have been working tirelessly to make sure that this will be a super memorable and not to be missed event. The GPS tracks will be loaded onto your units so that you may enjoy the separate easy or tougher routes at your own pace and even stop to soak in the breath taking scenery at your leisure.

Medical assistance will be in attendance throughout the event as well as marshals to sweep the routes to help where needed and check nobody gets left in the mountains. The emphasis of this weekend is on a good party, meeting awesome people and sharing in our passion, Adventure biking!

Packages are available for R3690pp all inclusive of meals, GPS rides, medical and awesome entertainment.
Please let me know this week if you would like to book a spot and I’ll ensure to list you as attending. Spaces are limited, especially for partners, so please get in quick!

“Terror Topia” Skills day- Sunday 6th October
For all of you that like to do unusual things on your Adventure bikes, may I present a day of Intermediate to Advanced skills which will allow you to take the control of your motorcycle off road to another level.
Please note that this is not a novice day, we will be venturing where enduro bikes usually tread and navigating some mud, water, ruts and thick sand. What we aim to achieve is to impart a sense that you can accomplish almost anything on a large motorcycle, provided you put the correct techniques into practice. We are going to coach you, teach you and help you to raise you riding to the next level, probably far higher than you ever thought possible.
You’ll probably drop your bike, get a bit muddy and break into a serious sweat at times, but what I can promise is that you’ll learn a lot about you and your bikes capabilities and enjoy a great day out.
R300 will book you a place and get you fed as well, so if this floats your boat, register with me now.

Beginners Skills Day – ERORA – Saturday 19th October
Do you want to learn the basic skills that will boost your confidence when you venture off the tarmac on your big heavy Dual Sport motorcycle? Come and join us at the East Rand Off Road Association for a fun day of learning skills and practicing techniques that will enable you to tackle most situations that are presented to the travelling motorcyclist.

This day is aimed at the novice gravel rider and caters for all skill levels. Please note that a familiarity of riding a motorcycle is required as this is not a “learn to ride a bike” course. We will be helping you become confident with traction, braking on gravel, cornering and even gradients.
R300 will secure your place on this essential skills day and ensure that you go away with a new appreciation for dirt and a burning desire to hit the road less travelled. Oh yes, lunch will be included!

Swinburn Sizzle – 1-3rd November
A while back, RAD Adventure went scouting accommodation and routes along the Natal / Freestate escarpment and now we are ready to pull the trigger on or Swinburn Sizzle adventure ride. Our base will be the wonderful farm Klaarfontein which sleeps 12 and is right on the doorstep of 8 amazing passes which rise and fall over this majestic mountain range.

If Normandien’s, Bezuidenhout’s, Van Reenens and other passes in the area tickle your fancy then you must be sure to join us on this breath-taking trip. Two routes will be available for those hard core riders and those who would prefer a more civilised approach to explore the area. Partners and pillions are welcome and will be sure to enjoy themselves.

The cost of the weekend will be R1800 and we’ll leave RAD Moto early Friday morning to capitalise on the time available to us.

Roof with RAD Adventure
Ever wanted to experience the Roof of Africa Extreme Enduro but have never known if you were allowed to or how to go about it? Well we’ve managed to secure probably the last couple of beds in town from the 13-17th of November at The Maseru Backpckers and will be taking 12 clients down with us for the experience.
This will be a bare bones, hard core weekend, which will give us an idea of the ‘glamarous’ lives of privateer riders and the sacrifices that they make to participate in Africa’s most extreme enduro race. Long hours and lack of sleep added to extreme physical exertion will reveal itself as the reason that only the toughest and best prepared riders finish this gruelling event.

We won’t be following the actual race route thank goodness but we will get you into the mix at the spectator points, where you will be able to see the riders toiling up impassable climbs and plummeting down traction defying descents where you can possibly even lend a hand when necessary to get the riders to their end goal.
Costs are still to be finalised but it will be in the region of R2000 for the 4 nights meals excluded.
Are you ready for the Roof? Book your spot now!

So until next edition, remember those puncture repair kits and we look forward to seeing you on one or more of our great rides.

Keep exploring…

RAD regards
