Recognising a puncture

Any tips for recognising a puncture before you land up damaging things?
I got a puncture over the weekend, it was a very short ride down to the shops, about 25km there and back. Some tar, mostly gravel road.
I noticed just before getting home that the handling was a bit off, but not enough to be a huge concern.
Landed up ripping the valve off the tube!
