Route needed to get to Namibia from Joburg

I need some advise on a more interesting way of getting to Namibia. Final destination - Swakopmund. I am thinking of going through the Ariamsvlei Boarder but really don't want to have to slab it the 1000+km there. Anyone have some more 'interesting' routes for getting there [read dirt/gravel/offroad]? This is my first time to Namibia so any advice would be appreciated.
