Friday morning was at its best and Florider and I were on our way to Gubu dam for the night and then on to the bash on Saturday.
It was a beautiful ride until Mr Garmin told me to go straight instead of taking the new Katberg road.
The road became seriously rutted and the clouds grew darker as we approached, by now I knew we were on the old road and I made the decision to carry on. We were about 300 meters from the sign in gate when the rain and hail paid us a visit and what a visit. We could not double back as those evil ruts would have been flooded and impossible to ride so the only choice was to go over the pass.
We ended up staying at ‘The Edge’ in hogsback due to loosing too much time on the snotty pass.
I can honestly say the pass has been scraped and patched with white, black and red clay and would be a pleasure to ride when dry. The last time I did the pass there were rocky steps, pinnacles, crevices , one meter visibility and all manner of technical shite thrown at us but now it is only the wet clay that causes turmoil but stick to the sand stone and rough stuff there is no slipping.
Katberg is a lovely pass and all one needs is good balance and choose the correct line and you will have an awesome ride.
Thanks to Florider who kept me company who said that this is a proper adventure and to Vis Arend who kept in communication with us and makes a mean pot Bread.
This trip I was using a head cam ( Contour ) from Bikegear set at the lowest resolution and grabbed some frames from it and I used my normal camera where possible, please excuse the head cam photos as I said I did have it on the low res and I will embed a vid clip or two when I learn how.
The photos are a bit mixed up but you all will get an Idea of the trip.
