Small D/S bike wanted... no longer

I'm 18, been riding a DT125 on and offroad for 3 years and am looking for an upgrade of 300-450cc's as a 500 is probably too powerful for my level of experience? I can, however pick up a 500 without any difficulty. It needs to be roadworthy and able to do trails, something like the tt, xt or xl. Offers and advice for this greenie?
