Total Newbie looking for my first bike.

Hi all

Had a brief look at some of the posts next thing I know I had been on the web site for hours reading different views and opinions.
I look forward to adding my 2c as my knowledge grows.

For now I am in the market for my first Bike. "JHB"

I very nearly bought a 2006 BMW 650GS (standard version) - but decided to do some research before I rush into something I don’t know much about so after speaking to some friends who drive motorbikes they advised me to go for something bigger as I would quickly get bored of the 650GS. I’m happy for the advice as I believe the bike would have been great to learn with but I think the Dakar version would suit me more in the long run as ultimately I would like to do some proper off the beaten track rides.

Since then I have spent countless time researching different bikes.
So far what sticks out

BMWG650GS - Dakar
BMW F800GS
V-Storm 650
Africa Twin (if I could find one)
KTM 640 Adventure
KTM 990 Adventure - I really like this bike and feel comfortable sitting on it (in the shop) however is it too much to handle for a total novice?
Yamaha Tenere 660 - little bit high for me - can you drop the suspension?

Any advice will be much apprechiated.
