Van Reenens Pass - Old Road

I'm going down to Durban on Thursday (from Jhb) and have all day to get there.  I've always wanted to go down Van Reenens on that old road one sees on the right looking down from the N3.  Has anyone done this?  Is it ok to do and what route should be used to get onto this old road?

Any advice please?
