What makes a D/S bike?

Must at least be able to:

1. Tour - either long or short distances
2. Ride on-road - either commute, race etc
3. Ride off-road - from gravel roads to more trail-like stuff

In addition, some people may use it to:

- do high speed long distance tours (another category of touring)
- long distance off-road tours, typically multiple days even weeks (another category of touring)
- trans-continental travels
- motard - or has this become a totally different area of expertise lately
- trails - sub-category of off-road
