DRZ400 as replacement for KLR650

I wanted to originally just sell my KLR and pay off the car, but now Im thinking of rather getting a smaller, lighter bike for riding around town and playing with.  Jurgen recons the DRZ wont last as long as the KLR.
Personally I just feel that the KLR is a bit too heavy for technical riding.
Should one drop down to a 400cc and which other 400`s should I consider?
