How does a 950 speedo pick-up work?

Soooooo, ja, how does it work?

Busy replacing a rim and this ambidextrous setup got me wondering.

I can't see anything in the hub, nor the disk and all bolts are the same .....

My guess is - it sees all 6 bolts as 1 revolution. Am I right or just missing the obvious  :

The parts book calls them 'special' bolts - which to me is German for expensive - are they really magic and should I be scared of losing one  ;D
