Is this ethical?

After my blowout a couple of weeks ago, our insurance company has now said that they are going to write the bike off (KLE500).  A friend has suggested that we let them pay out for the bike and then request to buy the bike back from them and fix it up.  Most of the repairs to the bike are cosmetic.  The question "is this ethical?"
