The wife and I are planning a trip end of November / beginning of December through the NE Cape to PE, and returning through a part of the Karoo. That is a part of the country we hardly know, but I know a lot of WD's have travelled there or know the area. Seeing that it is quite some way from the Kalahari we won't go there often.
The trip will start just outside Hanover on a friend's farm. Initial plan for route is Middelburg, Steynsburg, Aliwal North, Sterkspruit, Lundin's Nek, , Rhodes, Naudesnek, Maclear, Ugie, Elliot, Queenstown, Hogsback, Grahamstown, Alexandria, PE, Kirkwood, Graaff-Reinet, Nieu-Bethesda, Hanover.
We prefer dirt to tar and will do a detour to ride good (scenic) gravel roads instead of slabbing on tar. Madie however insist on good gravel roads without too much sand and loose rocky descents as she wants to relax and enjoy the trip. Each of us will be on a BMW F 800 GS. Depending on circumstances at work we will have 10 - 14 days for the trip, and intend to spend at least 2 days in PE and 2 days in Kirkwood at friends.
We are open to any suggestions on alternative routes; 'must see' places and places to avoid.
What will be a good average distance per day? We want enough time to stop, look around and take pictures and not travel in the dark.
Where to stay, and where not.
Any WD's staying, or also touring, on the route during that time for a chat, a beer etc?
Thanks guys and girls, looking forward to your assistance.
